'SNL' Cold Open Mocks Super Bowl Ads Tackling Political Topics - Hollywood Reporter

'Schitt’s Creek' creator and star Dan Levy hosts this week, with Phoebe Bridgers as the musical guest.

Super Bowl banter and the flood of commercials that come with the big game took the spotlight for Saturday Night Live's Feb. 6 cold open.

Kenan Thompson, who played sportscaster James Brown in the sketch, touched on the hard times experienced by many today due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but noted "we come together in the spirit of football — and to murder millions of chickens for their delicious wings."

Thompson’s Brown along with Chris Redd's Nate Burleson, Mikey Day's Phil Sims and Beck Bennett's Boomer Esiason hit on how the NFL itself has pushed through games while dealing with new COVID-19 health and safety protocols but "got through with 700 cases."

The group then turned their attention to the plethora of commercials that will attempt to both advertise products and address racial injustice in America and vaccine availability, such as a Cheez-It ad noting their crackers are "historically delicious" or Budweiser reminding people to get "a second dose" of Bud Light.

Aidy Bryant also appeared for the cold open, playing both Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians. Her SNL castmembers teased her dual role situation by having her switch quickly between Reid and Arians as she discussed each team's strategy for Sunday — which ended up being quite similar.

Schitt’s Creek creator and star Dan Levy served as this week's host and was joined by musical guest Phoebe Bridgers.

For his opening monologue, Levy joked that one benefit of the pandemic was people finally had the chance to watch his comedy series that ultimately won nine Emmys. One unfortunate side effect though of Schitt's Creek's popularity is strangers stopping to say David Rose's iconic line "ew" to Levy.

Levy then gave a little tour of SNL's Studio 8H, but was blocked from getting too close to audience members and even doors a few times by the studio's safety officer Doreen, played by Aidy Bryant. As the actor roamed about the set, he soon found his father Eugene Levy fully protected from any pandemic issues by being in a glass case and surrounded by people in hazmat suits.

Levy's first sketch of the night included an over-caffeinated Universal theme park tour guide, offering scandalous stories and suggestions to tram riders. Another sketch of the night mocked a beloved pandemic past time — checking out home listings on Zillow.com. Parodied as a sensual advertisement, Levy and other SNL cast members joked on how "real estate is your sex now."

Keeping up with COVID-19 comedy (because nearly a year into the pandemic, this is a thing now), another sketch of the night poked fun at a group of friends saying they're "doing everything right" to stay safe during the pandemic — with a few exceptions, of course, like staying on a wrestling team, flying around the world for work, or having an extensively large pandemic pod. As the friend group began to eat some chili, they all realized they couldn't taste or smell — symptoms of COVID-19.

The sketch turned out to be a Super Bowl commercial with Dr. Fauci, played by Kate McKinnon, explaining how gathering to watch the big game is the antithesis to what people should be doing this weekend.

For Weekend Update, Colin Jost and Michael Che hit on controversial Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and Donald Trump. The House of Representatives has voted to expel Greene, who Che said "looked like the mug shot of a former child star," from two committees due to incendiary remarks she made before being elected last November.

Jost brought up how "former social media influencer" Donald Trump will not testify at his impeachment trial next week, which the Weekend Update co-host said was a shame because we deserve "one last show."

Next week's SNL episode will feature Regina King as the show's host and Nathaniel Rateliff as the musical guest.
