David Lander was an actor and comedian best known for his costarring role as Squiggy on the hit 1970s sitcom “Laverne & Shirley.”
Acting highlights
Lander, a Brooklyn native, and his comedy partner Michael McKean met and created their Lenny and Squiggy characters while they were acting students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, before “Laverne & Shirley” producer Garry Marshall hired them to bring their writing talents and their shtick to the show. Lander and McKean costarred in the show through its entire eight-year run on ABC.
After “Laverne & Shirley,” Lander went on to appear in dozens of television shows and movies, including “The Love Boat,” “Twin Peaks,” “Galaxy High,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “The Simpsons,” “The Bold and The Beautiful,” “Scary Movie,” and many more.
Ambassador for multiple sclerosis
Lander was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1984, and kept his condition private for 15 years before beginning to speak about it publicly. He published a memoir in 2000, Falling Down Laughing: How Squiggy Caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn’t Tell Nobody. He went on to serve as a goodwill ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
